General Provisions:
The Children’s and Outreach Services team is responsible for planning and implementing services to children, teens, and their caregivers whether the customer visits the library, bookmobile, or library web page. Children and teens are defined as a youth, newborn through about age 17. Since children mature at differing rates, it is not possible to set a specific age limit.
Under the general supervision of the Children’s and Outreach Services Coordinator, a Library Assistant performs such duties as may be required for daily operations of the Bookmobile and/or Children’s / Young Adult Service Areas. The essential duties listed below are representative of those working in the position. This list is not meant to be all inclusive. Other tasks may be assigned if they are of a similar nature. All library employees must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends.
Essential Duties:
A. Staffs the Children’s Services Desk
a. Assists users to locate appropriate materials and provides readers’ assistance.
b. Answers reference questions.
c. Assists patrons in using the computer catalog, Internet, word processing, and other electronic technologies and audio-visual equipment.
d. Troubleshoots computer and other equipment problems.
B. Prepares, promotes, and presents children’s programs and library tours as assigned.
C. Develops and distributes bibliographies and user aids to facilitate access to the children’s collection and promote its use.
D. Plans and prepares displays and signage to promote the Children’s Department programs, services and materials.
E. Distributes information on children’s services and programs to community agencies as assigned.
F. Assists in finding and checking out materials for teacher collections.
G. May assist in the selection of new materials and in the weeding process.
H. Oversees volunteers in the Children’s Department by providing training, scheduling, and tracking hours.
I. Provides backup for those assigned to outreach by sometimes working on the bookmobile, at satellite service outlets, or delivering materials to daycare centers.
J. Continues to stay professionally informed.
K. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements of the Position:
A. Knowledge and Skills
1. Proficient in the use of computers and common PC software such as Microsoft Office; proficient in searching the Internet and instructing children in its use.
2. Basic knowledge of children’s literature and interests.
3. Ability to engage, communicate, and interact well with children, their parents and caregivers.
4. Ability to present lively and entertaining programs.
5. Ability to establish good working relationships with other staff members and interact as part of a team.
6. Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions while working independently.
7. Willingness and ability to make logical exceptions to library policy procedures when warranted.
8. Fluency in Spanish not required, but definitely a plus.
B. Education/License/Certification Requirements
1. Bachelor’s Degree from a four year college or university with course work in early childhood education; or significant progress toward a degree in Education or Early Childhood Education and by submitting a mutually acceptable timetable to the Library Director for completion of a four-year degree.
2. Valid Wisconsin Drivers License and a clean driving record.
C. Physical Requirements
1. Standing, walking, stooping, and reaching.
2. Talking and hearing; use of the telephone.
3. Far vision at 20 feet or further, and near vision at 20 inches or less.
4. Handling: picking up and shelving materials.
5. Fingering: keyboarding, writing, filing, sorting, stapling, and cutting.
6. Lifting, carrying: 50 pounds or less.
7. Ability to push or pull a cart of materials on wheels weighing 20 – 50 pounds.
D. Working Environment
1. Library
2. Occasional outside programming in schools, daycare and community centers, the bookmobile, and/or satellite service outlets.
E. Equipment Used
1. Microcomputer and computer terminals, printer, etc.
2. General office equipment such as calculator, copy machine, etc.
3. AV equipment such as a video projector
4. Occasional use of a delivery van
